Canadian Citizenship Test Prep: how it works and how to use it
Canadian Citizenship Test Prep is our practice site for the Canadian citizenship test, at citizenship.chowchowlabs.ca. It gives you practice tests in the same format as the real one, study pages for every topic in the official guide, and a plan to follow. This page explains how it’s built and how to use it well.
The test it prepares you for
Applicants for Canadian citizenship who are 18 to 54 on the day they sign their application take a test on Canada’s history, government, rights and responsibilities, symbols and geography. It has 20 questions, multiple choice or true or false, and you have 45 minutes. You need 15 correct answers (75%) to pass. Everything on it comes from one source: Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship, the official study guide from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
The guide is packed with names, dates and numbers. That makes it easy to read once and still get caught on details, which is where practice earns its keep.
What’s on the site
| Section | What it’s for |
|---|---|
| 20 practice tests | 400 questions in all, 20 per test, timed at 45 minutes and scored against the real 15-of-20 pass mark. |
| Study pages by topic | One page for each part of Discover Canada: rights and responsibilities, who we are, history, modern Canada, how Canadians govern themselves, federal elections, the justice system, symbols, the economy, and the regions. |
| Study plans | A 7-day plan if your test is close, and a 30-day plan if you have time to learn it properly. |
| Review | Every question you got wrong, in one list, with its explanation, so you can go back over them before test day. |
Practice tests are available in English and French, the two languages the real test is offered in.
How the questions are written
Every question is written from Discover Canada itself, and every explanation points to the part of the guide the answer comes from. IRCC doesn’t publish the real question bank, so no practice site has the actual questions; any site that claims to should make you suspicious. What we can do is cover every topic in the guide, at the level of detail the real test uses. We review questions against the current edition of the guide; our editorial policy explains how.
What’s free
Practice tests 1 to 7 are free to take as often as you like, and so are all the study pages and both study plans. You don’t need an account to start. An optional paid plan unlocks the other 13 practice tests and keeps your history and review list across devices, and removes ads. Seven full tests is enough practice for many people, especially if you also read the guide.
A good way to use it
- Read Discover Canada once from start to finish. It’s free on the Government of Canada website.
- Take one practice test cold, under the real 45-minute limit, to find your weakest topics.
- Work through the study page for each weak topic, then re-read that chapter of the guide.
- Review every wrong answer. Dates, numbers of seats and who holds which office come up again and again.
- Keep taking full tests until you pass comfortably, not just barely. Aim for 17 or more.
Our guide on how to study for a knowledge test goes deeper into this method.
Who it’s for
Permanent residents getting ready to apply or waiting for their test invitation, and family members helping them study. The site works on any phone or computer, and the iPhone app has the same tests.
